About Us
The first information about Scouting in Winchcombe is a record in the minutes of the first meeting of The Baden Powell Scouts in Winchcombe on Monday 13th April 1908. They used the name of “The Mercian Owls”. The founding President was Eleanor Adlard. Interestingly, of the 21 original members (both young and old) 11 were females. Can we claim to have been coeducational before the word was introduced to the Scout movement?
Since those early days, the Group has continued to strive to meet the ambitions of the local young people, both in Winchcombe and the surrounding villages, to take part in our Scouting Adventure. From using begged and borrowed meeting places, the Group has progressed to owing its own plot of land and Headquarters. Originally the bog standard “Scout Hut”, the Group has a purpose-built HQ, built in the early 1980’s, which we are proud to call our own. How many young people have passed through the Group over the years? What memories do they carry with them of their time in the Group?
